Genre Research: Drama
Hello, my name is Jose Retana. Today, I will drive you step by step on how I chose my genre. Of course, if you want to see my decision, skip to the decision blog. In this blog, I will drive you through one of my choices/candidates: Drama. The drama genre delves into the emotion in humans. It explores a characters interpersonal situations and internal conflicts. It mainly aims to get an emotional response from the viewer.
Common camera, angle, movement, and shot techniques used:
- Eye level shot: Allows for realism
- Low angle shot: Conveys sense of power
- Zoom: Intensifies the moment
- Establishing shot
- Medium shot: Keeps in touch with the character emotions while showing surroundings
- Medium close-up: Emphasizes emotion
- Extreme close up: Conveys very strong emotion
Common costume, lighting, acting, makeup, prop, and set techniques used:
- Acting: Most important, actors have to be able to show emotion convincingly
- Lighting: Can affect how a person's emotions are shown
- Makeup: Can also convince an audience of the emotions
Common editing techniques used:
- Fade in
- Fade out
- Shot/Reverse
Common sound techniques used:
- Sound motif
- Dialogue ( for all genres by the way I forgot to include it )
Films in this genre:
-Whiplash
-Creed
-Sound of Freedom
-The Equalizer
My Thoughts
- I really enjoy this genre. It's another genre that lasts with you for a long time. My favorite movie of all time actually falls under this genre, and it's Joker (2019). There are a lot of good movies in this genre because it relies a lot on a good acting performance. I love that aspect of it, getting an emotional response from the viewer. I would use this aspect in my project if I chose this genre.
- However, there is a complaint. Sound and editing techniques are also sort of lacking. The same problem happened in the psychological thriller genre, maybe because they're similar. Again, it might be a fault on my part where I didn't do enough research. But, if it comes out that I'm unable to find any sound or editing techniques, that would be unappealing.
