Title Research (Se7en)
Hello, my name is Jose Retana.
Earlier I researched watchthetitles.com. I researched this site in order to get a feel of what is expected of me when I make my own opening sequence. I looked at the different aspects and asked myself why that was added. This helped me in my purpose of looking for a standard to meet. What also helped was seeking different conventions used throughout opening sequences. This helped me to visualize what I need. This site as well gave me a large range of films to choose from. Another reason I researched the site is that this it gives insight/behind the scene of the people who made the opening sequence. This helped further my analysis in breaking down these opening sequences. Researching this site has given me good references.
In this site, I found the psychological thriller "Se7en," and analyzed its entire opening sequence. Here are some questions I answered through my analysis:
What titles are displayed during the opening sequence?
- While analyzing the sequence, I first noticed that the studio that presents the film, who’s production it was, and who the film belonged to was is the first priority. Next was the main character’s actors followed by the movie title. Next, the side cast, like people who play side characters. After that came people who helped make the film, like costume designers, producers, casting directors, editors. Finally at the very end came the writer and the director.
What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
- I see that it mostly flashes between scenes as transitions but they’re quick and fits my genre of thriller. Images of a man opening and writing a book are all over. The zooming in and out, the flashing, the cuts of those sequences are what is mostly prioritized. It works like the inside of clock, with everything mechanically working together to make this effect that throws off the viewer.
How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?
- As I mentioned, this film uses flashing to create this unsettling, psychological but thrilling effect that throws you off. The quick flashing from moment to moment really give it a thrill, like something is about to happen. Another thing was the audio, it really also gave that thrilling effect in the same way. Also, the lighting was essential in creating the psychological feel, and for me this lighting gives of the feel that you’re in a mental hospital.
