Genre Research: Psychological Thriller

Hello, my name is Jose Retana. Today, I will drive you step by step on how I decided on my genre. Of course, if you want to see my decision, skip to the decision blog. In this blog, I will drive you through one of my choices/candidates: Psychological thriller. Psychological thriller mixes the thriller and psychological aspects of film. It is neither a psychological genre or thriller, it relies on plot twists, suspense, tension. It digs deeper than a normal plot.

Common camera, angle, movement, and shot techniques used:

  • Dutch Shot: A tilted angle on the camera angled on the face, this typically comes before a plot twist, which is characteristic of this genre.
  • Zoom: It creates a sense of intensity
  • God's eye view: Signifies detachment, which usually comes after a plot twist
  • Take
  • Shot
  • Medium Shot
Common costume, lighting, acting, makeup, prop, and set techniques used:

  • Costume: Commonly in outfits with color schemes that make the viewer feel a certain way
  • Lighting: Used to manipulate areas in order to create a tone
  • Acting: Frequently used to create tension
  • Set: Sets the feel of the movie, can help create a thrilling atmosphere in this case
Common editing techniques used:
  • Cross cutting: Makes tension by having two scenes happening at once
  • Cutaway: Interrupts the main scene
Common sound techniques used:
  • Sound bridge: Enhances continuity, which is rich in this genre
  • Ambient sound: Sets tone, something commonly associated with psychological thriller
  • Diegetic Sound
Films in this genre:
-Fight Club
-The Silence of the Lambs
-Se7en
-Black Swan

My Thoughts

  • I have a few good things to say about this genre. It isn't your typical horror or drama movie, it's different and original. I like this about this genre, it combines two genres into one, and makes it unique. It has a variety of camera angles and mis-en-scene that I would use. It's strategic in making the viewer feel a way, and it heavily depends on plot twists, suspense, and tension, everything that makes a film fun. On top of that, most films in this genre have a lasting impact, something I want.
  • However, I have one complaint. It has a lack of variety in editing and sound techniques. Maybe I didn't research enough, and that is likely the problem. If this is all I could find however, then this is something that doesn't appeal to me. I'd have to work around this lack of choice and put in more effort. It sucks, but I will research more techniques to see if it's an error on my part.
